The Albanians have suffered the communism for 50 years and the bitter traces of history can be found in different parts of Tirana. The communism are all over the city . They used to be gray , but after communism was over in 1992 , Tirana was give a new look. The buildings were painted with beautiful colors . If you want to know what are the communist buildings in Tirana we suggest you some of the objects through this few hours of mourning:
First, we will visit the National Historical Museum, the largest museum institution in Albania.
The National Historic Museum's facade is a 10 x 40 m giant mosaic with a surface of 400 m2, contains 13 characters, Illyrian and anti-Ottoman fighters, National Renaissance figures, two iconic figures: worker and peasant, and five figures that represent the National Liberation War.
After that we will go to palace of culture , which is very close by. The palace of culture was build at the old bazaar and the first brick was was deployed by former Soviet President Nikita Khrushchev on June 3, 1959. The architecture of this building has a major impact on the Palace of Congresses in Rome and the construction of the Finnish Station in St. Petersburg.
After leaving Skanderbeg Square we will head for the "Dëshmorët e Kombit" boulevard to visit the National Gallery of Arts. Not only the building belongs to that time, but the works within show too much about the art of socialist realism.
After that we will go to see chalvar’s buildings , which have a typical Soviet-style structure and some of them were built in record time with the work of regime prisoners at that time.
The next stop will be the Congress Palace, which was designed and built in the 1980s as a symbol of communist ideology and expression of the power of the totalitarian regime.
Another communism period building is “Stalin Textile Combo” , 6 km from the centre of the city . This name was taken from a textile combination built with Soviet support in the early 1950s. The combination is out of order, but the building is in the same style as most factories around the country.
DAJTI
It only takes 13 minutes to climb with cable car in the highiest mountain of Tirana , Dajt, 1613 meters .
The cable car ride provides a summary of life in Albania and its history. The more you climb the mountain you will see unpaved roads and the home of the villagers as they come down. The ruins of Dajti are the oldest residential trails in Tirana, dating from 10,000 to 30,000 years ago. You will further note the notorious military bunkers, the terrible whereabouts of countless executions of political prisoners during the communist regime. As they say in Albania: "These mountains are full of skeletons".
However , despite of the history , this trip offers a wonderfull view of Tirana which is breathtaking. Through the clouds you can distinguish the port of Durres and the Adriatic Sea from far. The resort restaurant, located at the foot of the mountain, is the perfect place to take in the wonderful view, but for this privilege you will have to pay. You will enjoy the traditional restaurant surrounded by flora and fauna.
After relax and lunch you will be back in Tirana .
It is one of Tirana's most popular caves. The journey from Tirana to the village of Pëllumbas lasts about 45 minutes. Then you will walk about 2 km on the road leading to the "Black Cave" or "The Black cave of pellumbas". The panorama along the way is amazing, the mountain stretching in the Erzen river canyons. To go up there follow the national road Tirana-Elbasan and in Ibë turn left to the village of Pellumbas. The road is good to the village of Pëllumbas.
The black cave is almost one hour climbing in the Pellumbas village ,27 Km southeastern of Tirana . the cave is 360 meters deep and 17 meters high, inside there are fantastic stalactites as well as bats. In the cave is completely dark, as there is only one entry. 40 thousand years ago, the cave was the house of bears. It was then used as a residence for people in the Middle Ages. During the World Wars, the cave was a secret place and was used by residents to shelter. There are only five such caves in Europe, but the Pellumbus Cave has traces of early settlements since the Paleolithic to the Middle Ages.
It was presented to the public for the first time by a study of Italian speleologists in collaboration with Albanian after 90's (95-96). Then it became part of the outdoor climbing itinerary by the HASH sports group, which was a mix of foreigners in our country with Albanian citizens. For many years it was frequented by this group which made this cave known to Tirana and beyond. Today, all mountain guides operating in Tirana recognize this destination, which is also marked with orientation marks.
